NY/NJ port drayage questions, answered
Understand what is included in a CedarLink estimate, what can change, and what operations confirms before dispatch.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between demurrage and per diem?
Demurrage is generally charged while an import container remains at the marine terminal beyond its free time. Per diem is generally charged by the ocean carrier after the container leaves the terminal and is not returned within the equipment free-time period. Both depend on the applicable terminal or ocean-carrier terms, so operations verifies the dates for each container.
Is fuel included in your rate?
The instant marketplace comparison shows base drayage before fuel. Every NY/NJ downloadable estimate itemizes CedarLink’s mileage-indexed fuel surcharge and the estimated total. Other conditional charges and verified pass-through items are shown separately only when they apply.
What is a chassis split and when am I charged chassis days?
A chassis split occurs when the driver must obtain or return the chassis at a location different from the container terminal, subject to the confirmed operating plan. CedarLink includes the first 3 standard chassis days in the estimate and charges $40 per day beginning on Day 4. Special-equipment chassis conditions are confirmed separately.
What is a pre-pull and when do I need one?
A pre-pull moves the container from the terminal to a carrier yard before final delivery, often to protect the last free day or work around terminal and appointment timing. The charge is $100 per occurrence when the customer requests it or operations determines it is required for the confirmed move plan.
What happens if my container is overweight?
Operations reviews the actual gross weight, container size, legal route, permit requirements, and whether a tri-axle or other special equipment is required. Any permit or special-equipment charge is confirmed per affected container after actual weights and routing are available; the online estimate does not guess those costs.
What is a street turn?
A street turn reuses an import container for an approved export move instead of returning the empty equipment first. The ocean carrier, equipment number, interchange authorization, timing, and responsible parties must all be confirmed before the turn is treated as approved.
Is the online estimate a rate confirmation?
No. This is a non-binding estimate. Final rate is confirmed before dispatch. Operations must confirm the route, terminal conditions, equipment, capacity, empty-return plan, and customer-specific terms before the move is booked.
How fast do you respond?
The operations response target is within two operating hours during normal operations. A terminal closure, late-day exception, or issue requiring outside confirmation can take longer, but the team will keep the request moving and communicate what is still needed.
Which markets and terminals are available?
CedarLink currently publishes planning benchmarks for NY/NJ, Chicago/Joliet, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles/Long Beach, and Oakland. Eligible NY/NJ lanes can receive an instant base estimate. Other markets receive a non-binding CedarLink planning estimate before any carrier-confirmed quote, service, or capacity is represented as available.
Do you offer volume pricing?
Yes. Eligible base drayage may receive up to 1% for 2-4 containers, 2% for 5-9, 3% for 10-19, 4% for 20-49, or 5% for 50 or more. A single container receives no volume adjustment. Chassis, terminal charges, verified tolls, accessorials, and other pass-through items are never discounted.
